“Curiouser and curiouser…”
The actors from Tim Burton’s 2010 version of “Alice in Wonderland” are returning to the big screen in Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass. Burton will co-produce but not direct the sequel, set to hit theaters in May 2016.
Australian actress Mia Wasikowska reprises her role as Alice, Johnny Depp again dons the massive hat and fiery red hair for the Mad Hatter, and Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter take their places as the warring White and Red Queens, respectively.
“Looking Glass” will also include some new faces. Funny man Sacha Baron Cohen gets the difficult job of personifying Time in the new film, and Rhys Ifans is slated to play the Mad Hatter’s equally kooky father.
Fans of Lewis Carroll’s original story will note that neither of these characters appear in the text, and plot details have yet to be released by anyone involved. A majority of the characters unique to Carroll’s sequel – The Tweedles, White Queen, Jabberwocky – have been utilized by Burton in the first film.
That leaves plenty of speculation and wiggle-room for writers looking to create new and fantastical beasts in this new film.
